Pete Alonso eyes Mets' homer mark in matchup with Guardians
August 5 - Pete Alonso inched closer to the New York Mets' all-time home run record on Monday. The Cleveland Guardians' unlikely playoff push took another small step forward, too. The Guardians will look to clinch a series win on Tuesday when they visit the Mets in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set. Left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 4.06 ERA) is slated to start against Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (9-6, 3.45). Gabriel Arias homered and finished with four RBIs on Monday for the Guardians, who overcame squandering a five-run lead to edge the Mets 7-6 in 10 innings. Alonso socked a three-run shot in the sixth inning, the 251st homer of his career, one shy of Darryl Strawberry's record Mets total. The long ball began the comeback for the Mets, who tied the game in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. Alonso, who hit an RBI single in the eighth, struck out in the ninth against Cade Smith before Jeff McNeil lined out. The Guardians scored twice in the 10th, when automatic runner Daniel Schneemann came home from second on a throwing error by third baseman Brett Baty before Arias added a sacrifice fly. The chaotic win improved the Guardians to 17-7 since July 7 -- the third-best record in the majors in that span behind only the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland is 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, who are tied for the last two American League wild-card spots. The Guardians were seven games out of the last playoff spot through July 6. Cleveland has mounted its push despite the absence of starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz and closer Emmanuel Clase, both of whom were placed on the restricted list last month while they are the subjects of gambling investigations by Major League Baseball. "We just need to get in," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "We just want to get in the dance and give ourselves a chance. I love the way our guys are playing. We just need to continue to be us every single day." The Mets might be in the process of making their path to the playoffs more difficult than it appeared nearly two months ago. New York had the best record in baseball at 45-24 through June 12 but is just 18-26 since. The Mets occupy the second National League wild-card position and are 1 1/2 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East -- matching their largest deficit since July 2. Alonso took solace in the comeback by the Mets, who took a 12-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday and didn't get a runner past second base in the first five innings Monday against Slade Cecconi. "I think it'd be more concerning if we just kind of got blown out 5-0," Alonso said. "But for us to kind of battle back and keep fighting, that's a lot of good signs." Allen earned a win in his most recent start, when he gave up two runs over a season-high seven innings as the Guardians beat the Colorado Rockies 10-4 on July 29. He has yet to face the Mets. Holmes took a defeat on Wednesday after allowing four runs (two earned) over a season-low 3 2/3 innings as the Mets fell 5-0 to the visiting San Diego Padres. HOUSTON (AP) — Nick Kurtz became the first major league rookie to hit four homers in a game, leading the Athletics to a 15-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. Kurtz went 6-for-6 with eight RBIs and six runs scored. He's just the second player in Major League Baseball history to have four homers in a six-hit game, joining Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 23, 2002 at Milwaukee. It was the first six-hit game for the Athletics since Joe DeMaestri on July 8, 1955 at Detroit. The 23-year-old also had a single and a double for 19 total bases. His double hit just below the yellow line over the visitor's bullpen in the fourth inning. Kurtz singled in the first and his two-run homer in the second put the Athletics ahead 5-0. His solo shot in the sixth made it 10-2. His third homer was his longest, a 414-foot drive into the second deck in the eighth. Kurtz's final homer came against outfielder Cooper Hummel, a three-run, opposite-field line drive to the Crawford boxes in left field that made it 15-2. Kurtz extended his hitting streak to 12 games and his 23 home runs are the most for an A's rookie since Yoenis Céspedes in 2012 and fourth most in franchise history. Tyler Soderstrom and Shea Langeliers also homered for the A's, who had a season high in runs. Jeffrey Springs (9-7) allowed two runs over six innings. Zack Short hit a two-run homer for Houston in the fifth. Ryan Gusto (6-4) allowed eight runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. With 4 homers, A's rookie Nick Kurtz becomes first MLB player with at least 6 hits, 6 runs and 8 RBIs
HOUSTON — If he had not done it already, A's rookie Nick Kurtz put an entire league on notice Friday night at Daikin Park. Kurtz became the 20th man in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a game and the first rookie to accomplish the feat. He finished 6-for-6 with 19 total bases and eight RBIs, spearheading a 15-3 shellacking of the Houston Astros. Advertisement Kurtz is the first player in baseball history to finish a game with at least six hits, six runs and eight RBIs. His 19 total bases matched a record set by Shawn Green on May 23, 2002. Selected fourth overall during last July's draft, Kurtz raised his season slash line to .305/.374/.686 across his first 271 major-league plate appearances. Since Kurtz made his debut on April 23, only New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge has a higher OPS than his 1.060 mark. On Friday, in just his 65th major-league game, Kurtz played perhaps one of the best games in the sport's history. He collected three hits off Astros starter Ryan Gusto — a fellow rookie — including an opposite-field home run in the second inning. Kurtz homered in his final two at-bats. He ambushed a first-pitch, four-seam fastball from Houston reliever Kaleb Ort in the eighth inning. A frame later, facing position player Cooper Hummel, Kurtz poked a 77.6 mph offering into the Crawford Boxes in left field, sending his dugout into delirium and a half-empty ballpark into a state of shock.
